The Intel Core i9-12900K Processor is an interesting beast, packing 8 performance cores along with 8 efficient cores for a total of 24 threads, which seems like a strange number, and that’s because those efficient or “E-cores” don’t support Hyper-Threading. The P-Cores clock up to 5.2 GHz, with the E-Cores limited to 3.9 GHz. There’s 30 MB of L3 cache, a total of 14MB of L2 cache, 16 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the CPU, and four PCIe 4.0 lanes. Another new feature is DDR5 memory support, though Alder Lake also supports DDR4. Intel has been combating an uphill struggle for the past couple of years, ever since AMD first unveiled its Zen architecture with its Ryzen processors. Ever since then, it looks as if Intel has been playing catch-up, each in well-known overall performance and in terms of its generation. However, Intel Core i9-12900K genuinely has pulled ahead, and it seems like Team Blue is again on top, at least for now. These Alder Lake-S processors mark one of these big developments over their 11th-generation Rocket Lake predecessors, and Intel can once again declare its “exceptional gaming processor” without massaging the numbers to lots. However, those new processors include a brand new socket, which means that anyone will need to improve at least their motherboard, if now no longer their memory and CPU cooler as well. Luckily, there are Z690 motherboards available that support DDR4 reminiscence, which has decreased the cost of access for a few folks.
